Many have been wondering when we might get to see Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, Lost River. Well, yesterday we got our first proper look at the film when Entertainment One released the official trailer.
The film tells the story of a single mother (Christina Hendricks) who enters a dark lifestyle after falling into financial difficulties, while her eldest son (Iain De Caestecker) runs afoul of the town’s feared bully (a head shaven Matt Smith), before discovering a hidden path leading to an underwater utopia.
Gosling has no doubt taken more than his fair share of cues from his former directing collaborators, with hints of Nicolas Winding Refn and Derek Cianfrance shining through the visual motifs and designs.
It all looks very surreal and dreamlike. Whether or not it will all translate into a coherent whole is another story, but it’s great to see former Doctor Who star Matt Smith stretch his acting muscles with a character who is a little more unhinged than the famous Timelord.
Unfortunately, if the reviews from last year’s Cannes film festival are anything to go by, Mr. Gosling might not be as talented behind the camera as he is in front of it. In his review, Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian called the film “colossally indulgent, shapeless, often fantastically and unthinkingly offensive and at all times insufferably conceited.” Ouch!
You can judge for yourself when the film hits UK screens on April 24th.
