The second trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s (District 9, Elysium) latest science fiction epic, Chappie, has just sprung up online for your viewing pleasure.
Whereas the first trailer played out as a sort of updated version of Short Circuit, this second trailer goes all out on the action front. As CNN’s own Anderson Cooper states, Chappie is part of the world’s first robotic police force, but is unique from his brethren as he has the ability to evolve and feel.
I have to admit, I was pretty disappointed with this trailer. While I like Blomkamp as a director (I’m a staunch defender of Elysium), his third feature behind the camera comes across as a cross between Short Circuit and Robocop, loaded with ideas and visuals that we’ve already seen before. Of course, it’s just a trailer, so we should reserve judgment until we see the finished product, but right now, this looks nothing more than an unoriginal sci-fi action flick.
Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver are on villain duties. You can tell because Jackman is sporting one of the worst mullets this side of 1980s and Sigourney Weaver is barking orders whilst sitting behind a desk.
Also starring Dev Patel and Sharlto Copley as Chappie, Blomkamp’s latest is out March 6th.
