Heavily stylised, visually and thematically striking movies are Quentin Tarantino’s speciality and his latest release, The Hateful Eight, looks set to continue this trend. Set in a post-Civil War, snow-covered Wyoming, the movie is an exciting throwback to the Hollywood Western genre and follows eight characters who seek refuge from a snowstorm in a stagecoach stopover.
The Hateful Eight gained press back in early 2014 when the script was leaked online. Tarantino considered cancelling the movie and publishing the story as a novel but instead, following a change of heart, The Hateful Eight began filming this year.
The action-packed trailer suggests that Tarantino’s eighth movie will more than satisfy his many fans. Regular Tarantino collaborator Samuel L Jackson looks set to play a key role, with Kurt Russell co-starring as a fellow bounty hunter. The movie also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh as a murderous fugitive, as well as Channing Tatum, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen.
The talented cast, Tarantino’s formidable reputation and the hype surrounding the trailer hints that The Hateful Eight could repeat the success of Tarantino’s previous Westerns, Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, both of which were awards season favourites.
Film fans will be delighted to hear they can enjoy The Hateful Eight in select 70mm theatres from December onwards, before the film gets a wider release in January 2016.
