Could this be the film that finally wins Leo an Oscar, or will one of Hollywood’s longest running jokes find another notch on its bedpost? Based on true events The Revenant is already a strong awards contender and this latest look at the movie packs a serious punch.

The trailer sees Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) heading up a team of frontier explorers, when he’s attacked by a bear and left for dead by none other than Tom Hardy. As John Fitzgerald, Hardy’s grit and grizzle is well set here and he has all the makings of a character you just want to punch (in the best way, of course).

Leo, in true hero fashion, vows “I ain’t afraid to die anymore, I done it already”, and with revenge on the brain sets off on his epic journey across the American landscape, battling the elements, himself and everyone around him.

From the beating of the drums to those great sweeping scenic views you can see this is gearing up to be an intense western epic, with a budget to boot and a shoot that’s been marred by difficulties. Whether it delivers on all frontiers is yet to be determined, but it’s going to be one hell of a journey finding out.

The Revenant is out in UK cinemas 15 January 2016.
