Tory is a fashion, fine-art and documentary photographer based in London. She answered my questions on her life as a photographer and her work.
Q. Describe your approach to photography in 20 words or less.
Tory: To create my own style in each scene and be open to inspiration as it comes….
Q. When did you first pick up a camera?
Tory: Around 8 years old. Since then, photography has been a big part of my life ever since.
Q. Your portfolio ranges from fashion & beauty photographs to documentary shots and abstract nudes. Do you have a favourite genre to shoot?
Tory: I love to shoot all genres. I wouldn’t say I have a favourite. At the moment, I’m enjoying shooting fashion, I feel very free and open to be creative whether it be in the studio or on location. In any genre, Im always very inspired by people and try and get to know my subjects before I shoot.
Q. Barbie, my little pony, hair that looks like candy-floss…your ‘Candy Pop’ series is literally every young girls dream. Can you give us an insight into that particular shoot?
Tory: This shoot is based around an obscure dream world of two Candypop dolls – think 90’s Pop, Candy Colour, Barbie, My Little Pony, Care Bears, Love Hearts, Popping Candy and Rainbows! Working with such a talented team and great models helped bring to life such a strong story. One of my fav shoots so far!
Q. Who’s your biggest photography inspiration?
Tory: I have a few favourite photographers as Im interested in different genres. I look at each of them and I draw inspiration from them for different things.
Q. Anything exciting coming up on the Tory Smith calendar?
Tory: Phew…I have a busy few months coming up shooting for clients both in studio and on location. Will be shooting lot of fashion, advertorial and lifestlye work. Shooting different looks from classic British for Vogue Italia’s online blog to 1920s Vintage wear for Revival Retro. I’m currently storyboarding more super creative looks like my ‘Candypop’ work for clients and will be shooting a lot more fashion videos too.. Watch this space! 🙂
