People often aim to achieve certain things in life before they hit 30, and Tom Fletcher certainly has a lot to brag about. Not only is he the founding member and principal songwriter of McFly, he is a successful children’s author, wedding speech extraordinaire, popular vlogger, and father of an exceptionally cute toddler. To celebrate Tom’s 30th birthday, we’ve compiled a selection of some of his finest moments.

Wetting himself on stage in a production of Oliver!

Tom has been passionate about music and performing for most of his life and starred in Oliver! at the London Palladium when he was 10 years old. Landing this role was a massive milestone for Tom and was a fun experience…until he wet himself on stage in front of two thousand people, that is.

Being so obsessed with 80s movies that he named his band after one of them

It’s no secret that Tom was a geek growing up; movies such as Back to the Future, Ghostbusters and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure have shaped his personality and fed into his creative endeavours. His love of Back to the Future inspired him to name his band after its main character, Marty McFly. Tom is living proof that being a fanboy can pay off.

His breathtaking performance in Just My Luck

He demonstrated his acting abilities again when McFly appeared in Just My Luck alongside Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine in 2006. Although the film is entertaining, it probably worked out for the the best that Tom saved his talents for making music.

NASA playing a McFly song in space

Tom’s fascination with space led fans to get involved in an online campaign encouraging NASA to play McFly’s Star Girl on the International Space Station. To everyone’s astonishment, NASA actually went through with it and played the song to astronauts aboard the ISS.

His wedding speech

When faced with the prospect of giving a speech at his wedding, Tom was filled with dread. He ditched tradition and decided to write a song instead, using several popular McFly tunes to entertain the guests. The ingenious, original and tear-jerking video quickly went viral and has been viewed over 15 million times.

Co-writing a series of successful children’s books

Tom and his bandmate Dougie Poynter embraced their childish side to create the best-selling Dinosaur that Pooped series. These hilariously random stories incorporate Tom’s obsessions with dinosaurs, time-travel and space and can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

Shortly after their 10 year anniversary as a band, McFly joined forces with their friends James Bourne and Matt Willis from Busted. McBusted embarked upon the biggest UK tour of 2014, headlined a show at BST Hyde Park and supported One Direction on their world tour. The supergroup also released an album, featuring the likes of Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus and All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth.

Buzz Michelangelo Fletcher

Last year Tom and his wife Giovanna welcomed their son Buzz Michelangelo Fletcher into the world (he is indeed named after Buzz Lightyear, Buzz Aldrin and Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Tom frequently shares photos of Buzz dressed as various fictional characters including Yoda from Star Wars, Sulley from Monsters, Inc and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story. With the influence of Tom, Giovanna and the McBusted boys, we can only imagine how cool Buzz will be when he grows up.

His YouTube videos

The wedding speech isn’t Tom’s only noteworthy YouTube video. From Bump to Buzz has over 11 million views and the footage of Buzz laughing at dandelions has been watched over 7 million times. Tom also vlogs about some of his day-to-day activities, showing us that he is a normal, dorky human being when he’s not busy playing sell-out arena gigs.

Tom can turn 30 with the knowledge that he has a fair few accomplishments under his belt and it’s likely that his future undertakings will be most triumphant. Happy birthday, Tom!
