At first glance the trailer for Gary Rydstrom’s upcoming animated fantasy Strange Magic is exactly what it says on the tin. It is full of magic and it is very, very strange.

Starring the voices of Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristen Chenoweth and Maya Rudolph, this George Lucas animated movie is a musical fairy tale full of fantastical creatures and mythical culture clashes. There’s a lot to take in from the trailer but what stands out are the two opposing magical forest kingdoms, one full of bright coloured, butterfly inspired fairies and the other populated by goblins.

Tonally, the trailer is all over the place but there are enough hints of action to suggest that it isn’t an out and out comedy. As expected, the animation is vivid and detailed and if that’s not enough to win people over, the impressive voice cast should draw audiences in.

Strange Magic is due for release in the UK on the 11th February 2015.
