Straight Outta Compton – Music From The Motion Picture Review

Following the controversy and critical acclaim that came with the biopic’s cinema release, the Straight Outta Compton soundtrack provides the perfect blend of nostalgic hip-hop with a modern update, aiming to please fans both new and old.

With its name taken from N.W.A’s 1988 release, the updated soundtrack focuses on some of the much-loved original songs with a few extras from none other than Dr Dre himself. In August last year (2015) the film became a box office smash despite the split opinions on the portrayal of hip-hop/rap culture around the time the film is based. It brought to the mainstream a new perspective and tells a story of rags to riches, along with the challenges experienced along the way.

The soundtrack almost provides the same story structure as the film, with a clear beginning, middle and end. The audience follows the songs from various members of N.W.A until reaching the final track on the album by Dre and Snoop Dogg. The issues raised on the record are still as relevant as ever and highly reminiscent of some of the more premium and opinionated rap and hip-hop of today.

Regardless of the reviews the film gained, the sound you hear throughout on this soundtrack is a reinvention of a genre at it’s purest and arguably it’s finest. The album celebrates a time of innovation and originality. It also commends a place renowned for crime and hardship and glorifies it into a place of hope and dynamism forever relevant to its pioneers.

The Straight Outta Compton OST was released on 8 January, 2016.
