It’s been a fairly quiet week for theatre nationwide with the main news in the West End being the return of two old shows.
– Dirty Dancing is returning to London’s West End at the Piccadilly from 13th July. The show, which still holds the record of the fastest ever selling show in West End history, is also scheduled to tour nationwide next year. Both versions of the show are yet to confirm their casting.
– Alan Ayckbourn’s Relatively Speaking is to have its press night next week on the 20th May. The play, directed by Lindsey Posner, is a Theatre Royal Bath production and stars Felicity Kendal, Jonathan Coy, Kara Tointon and Max Bennett. The show will then continue until 31st August.
– Whispers around the West End district indicate that Hollywood actress Renee Zellweger is set to return to the stage. Zellweger, famed for her Oscar winning portrayal in Chicago and Bridget Jones, is rumoured to have signed up to appear in the play The Hustler, made famous by the film which starred Paul Newman and Jackie Gleeson.
– Stephen Fry is said to be in negotiations to play Lady Bracknell in a new production of Oscar Wilde’s play, which is to be staged at the prestigious Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The actor, comedian, quiz host and general omnipresent fixture on our screens, is thought to have been in discussion with producers for over a year for the part.
Keep posted because in a few weeks’ time, Brighton, Bath, Richmond and other main UK based theatres announce their new Summer season.
