Tom Hardy fans were in for a treat today when Entertainment One UK released the new trailer for Daniel Espinosa’s Child 44.

Set in Soviet Russia, the story is based on the real-life crimes of the Rostov Ripper, otherwise known as Andrei Chikatilo, a criminal convicted of 52 murders in the Soviet Union. Hardy stars as disgraced secret police agent Leo Demidov, who uncovers evidence of a serial killer and must work against the government to track him down.

Starring alongside Hardy are Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) and Vincent Cassel (Black Swan).

The trailer offers up a nice glimpse of the film, with Hardy, Oldman and Dance all proving to be quite adept at Russian accents.

Child 44 is based on Tom Rob Smith’s 2008 novel of the same name, which is the first book in a trilogy and was voted one of the top 100 thrillers of all time.

The film will be released in the UK on April 17.
