Napoleon Dynamite meets Donnie Darko.
*Wanted* Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid when you get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.
The above advert kicks off the film and a crass hapless reporter with two interns goes off to investigate the person behind it. Jake Johnson excellently plays the acerbic hack and I really liked Aubrey Plaza as deadpan intern Darius. Darius becomes increasingly attached to alleged time traveller Kenneth, as she tries to uncover the truth about him.
This film has the wonderfully aimless feel of the aforementioned Napoleon Dynamite, mixed with some punchy Diablo Cody style dialogue. It also constantly keeps you guessing. Is Kenneth a social outcast, deluded or could his claims have some grounding in reality? It also has some really tender moments, without lapsing in over sentimentality.
If you don’t know much about this film, you might be expecting some kind of sci-fi actioner, but you’d be disappointed. This ain’t no terminator. Rather it’s a funny off beat look at human relationships and the nature of reality it’s self. A real unexpected gem.
