Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death on February 2nd was a tragic loss to the acting community. His hypnotic presence was a constant source of cinematic joy, and his death leaves a major hole at the top of Hollywood’s acting elite. Already lauded as one of his finest performances by those who saw it at Sundance this year, the first trailer for Hoffman’s final leading role went live over the weekend. Imbued with an inescapable poignancy, A Most Wanted Man looks to be a tightly woven tale of espionage, with Hoffman delivering a fitfully grounded performance as Gunther Bachmann.
Based on the novel by John le Carre, A Most Wanted Man is a tale that prickles with both humor and tension. While German & US spies work together to fight the war on terror, a Chechen Muslim named Issa illegally enters Hamburg. As civil rights lawyer Annabel determines to save Issa from deportation, US & German authorities begin to suspect him of being a terrorist; so beginning a race against time to discover Issa’s true identity.
The trailer captures that dark, brooding atmosphere so characteristic of le Carre’s tales. The complicated plot has been praised for it’s enthralling insight in to the war on terror and with such a fantastic cast, which includes Willem Defoe & Rachel McAdams, A Most Wanted Man looks set to be yet another superb adaptation of a le Carre novel.
A Most Wanted Man will be released later this year.
