True to Great Gatsby style, the music video for Lana Del Rey’s Young and Beautiful mimics that old Hollywood glamour and age of decadence, something we don’t see very much of these days. In his own words, F. Scott Fitzgerald wished to create a novel that was “something new — something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned.” Young and Beautiful seems to take these words and turn them into something tangible, all the while maintaining the distinctive air of tragedy and mournfulness that we’ve come to expect and love from Del Rey. I adore the orchestra in silhouette, with the red and blue lighting adding to the dramatic quality of the video. It’s a simple and elegant concept, but then Lana Del Rey’s videos are almost always that way.
The single features on the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby and, whilst it might not be as universally audience pleasing as Florence and the Machine’s Over the Love or Beyonce’s version of Back to Black (both of which appear in the film), it’s hauntingly beautiful. This is one movie soundtrack you won’t want to miss!
