After a low-resolution version leaked on Wednesday night, the good folks over at Marvel decided to forgo their original plans, and unveil the first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron in all its high-resolution glory several days earlier than planned. And my word, it’s a doozy.
The story finds Tony Stark attempting to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program of specialized robots, led by the self-learning and self-aware artificial intelligence, Ultron. But things go awry and the Avengers end up getting far more than they bargained for. And that’s before they have to contend with a set of super powered twins.
Filled with all the necessary destruction and spectacle we’ve all come to expect from these sorts of movies, this first trailer certainly feels a lot darker and more sombre than one would expect. Accompanied by James Spader’s chilling voiceover as the malevolent Ultron, and a haunting version of Pinocchio’s “I’ve Got No Strings”, it seems that Joss Whedon is determined to put our heroes through the ringer more than once.
From the final glimpse of Ultron himself, to the money shot of Hulk taking on Tony Stark’s Hulkbuster armour, to a brief shot of Andy Serkis playing a human character of all things, there’s plenty here to gawk over again and again. I don’t know about you, but April seems very, very far away right now.
