The rumours for an Annie remake have been flying around for a long time – with Sony first announcing it in January of 2011, a star-studded cast continue to attach themselves to the project, only to leave shortly after. Finally, filming began September of last year and the trailer hit the internet this week.
This latest reboot still finds Annie as a penniless orphan living in New York, only unlike the other adaptations, we find ourselves in the modern day NYC. Carrying on from her comedy streak, it’s exciting to see Cameron Diaz as the infamous Miss Hannigan. Jamie Foxx’s character, Will Stacks, has been updated from millionaire to billionaire and Rose Byrne is perfect as his sweet, caring assistant Grace.
Nevertheless, it’s obvious the star will remain Annie herself, played by Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis. Easy A director Will Gluck is at the helm, with Will Smith and Jay-Z as producers, which will without a doubt give the film a fresh, modern feel that will make a whole generation of little girls begging their parents for the soundtrack.
Annie has no official UK release date, but is to be released in the US on the 19th of December.
