The newly formed Counterplay games, made up of ex-Blizzard and Insomniac developer Keith Lee and Rogue Legacy lead artist Glauber Kotaki, along with a host of other veteran creators and developers unveiled yesterday the development of a new tactical turn based strategy game, Duelyst.

Counterplay explains that the focus of the game is on skilled competitive multiplayer, achieved through fast paced 1 v 1 multiplayer battles. Unlike standard tactics games, players won’t have to spend hours grinding or focusing on resource management to progress. Instead the developer says, “Our goal is to vigilantly remove every extraneous feature from the game to focus on its heart and soul: squad-based tactical combat.”

With the emphasis squarely focused on competitive tactical combat, Counterplay assures us that “Every battle unit and spell is earned by spending time playing the game.  As a result, this is NOT pay-to-win!

Within Duelyst players will be able to choose from 4 different game modes including Single Player and Ranked Draft. They’ll also be able to customize their battle squads, selecting “from a roster of over 100+ battle units and spells, each with different stats and abilities.”

Furthermore each session is designed to last around half an hour, with the emphasis being on “unit positioning, understanding your squad’s capabilities, anticipating your opponent, and maintaining board control”, meaning players have to be more mindful of their tactics and how they chose to play.

Duelyst is set to appear in alpha towards the end of 2014 and upon full release will be playable on PC, Mac and as a web based browser game.

Along with the unveiling yesterday, the group also announced the launch of a 30-day Kickstarter campaign. For just $15 backers can now secure a digital copy of the game, and for $30 will receive access to the closed beta along with a number of in-game items and rewards.

Currently two days in to the campaign, Duelyst is already over half way towards reaching its goal of $68,000, with another 28 days left to go.
