Pathe UK released a teaser trailer for Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette today.

Starring Carey Mulligan as Maud and Meryl Streep as activist Emmeline Pankhurst, the highly anticipated drama tells the story of the early feminist movement’s foot soldiers who fought so tirelessly for equality. It is the first ever feature film to tackle the subject matter.

The teaser trailer was released to coincide with the upcoming general election. It supports the #VotingMatters campaign which was set up to encourage British women to vote after millions failed to have their say in the 2010 election.

With such an inspirational historical story at its heart, Suffragette is going to be an important film when it comes to the awards season. This first look, though brief, points at it being an emotionally charged and powerful tale about fighting for what you believe in and never giving up.

Starring along Mulligan’s bright-eyed Maud and Streep’s passionate Pankhurst will be Helena Bonham Carter, Romola Garai, Brendan Gleeson and Ben Whishaw.

Suffragette will open in UK cinemas nationwide on 30 October 2015.
