Finally, after a train wreck of a season introduction, Community has resumed normal service. In tonight’s episode (undoubtedly the best one of the season so far), on their return from Pierce’s (Chevy Chase) cult funeral dressed as giant blue penises and carrying his ‘spirit’ in the form of a fetching lava lamp, Pierce returns to cause chaos from beyond the grave.
According to his lawyer, Pierce Hawthorne’s last will and testament dictates that the group must take part in some bizarre game show of answering round after round of questions whilst hooked up to a lie detector.
Of course, it isn’t as simple as that. Just as he did when he was alive, Pierce takes rather too much pleasure in generating tension between the group and the questions betray pretty much every secret confessed to him in confidence – from Abed’s (Danny Pudi) ingenious tracking devices to Annie’s (Alison Brie) drugging of the group.
Thankfully, regardless of the devastation of group trust, the episode has a happy ending – which bodes well for the rest of season five. It also explains why Troy will soon be leaving the sitcom and leaves us with a warm fuzzy feeling inside…and maybe the urge to relive the 70s with the purchase of a lava lamp.
