Alycia Debnam-Carey has sure been busy of late. Not content with starring in two US shows at the same time (The CW’s The 100 and AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead), she’s also making her way on to the big screen in Simon Verhoeven’s Friend Request, which hits UK cinemas next month.

Warner Bros. released a trailer for the upcoming film this week, showing Debnam-Carey as the victim of a deadly social media curse. Yep, you read that right. Who knew Facebook could be so supernaturally fatal?

When popular student Laura accepts a friend request from the school’s social outcast, her life becomes cursed and those she cares about start dying grisly deaths. It’s up to Laura to solve the mystery surrounding the curse and break it before anyone else meets an untimely end.

It’s weird to see Debnam-Carey not in a post-apocalyptic world but she’s on fine form in this trailer as the terrified and tormented Laura. Also starring in the film is Gossip Girl’s Connor Paolo and British actor William Moseley (Narnia) as Laura’s friends Kobe and Tyler.

Talking about where the idea for the film came from, Verhoeven said: “A distant acquaintance of mine had died. Weeks later, I noticed that his Facebook profile was still available online, unchanged. I shuddered at the idea that I might suddenly receive a message from him. Friend Request was born in that moment.”

So there you have it. Expect possessions, hauntings and plenty of psychological and cyber-space horror in this suitably scary movie. It will be released in cinemas 22 April.
