It seems that 2015 is shaping up to be the year when movie studios play on the nostalgia of millions everywhere by resurrecting the franchises that most of us grew up with. And so, following on from the trailers of Jurassic World and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the first trailer for Terminator: Genisys has just landed, and it’s one of those that will surely divide opinions.
The trailer kicks off with scenes of Jason Clarke’s John Connor leading the human rebellion against the machines in hues of blues and stylish looking CGI. Jai Courtney’s Kyle Reese is then sent back in time to an alternate timeline where the Sarah Connor we first met in James Cameron’s 1984 original, is now a gun toting badass, having been raised and protected by Arnie’s aged T-800.
As you can see, rather than do the whole ‘reboot/remake’ malarkey, the filmmakers have gone the old JJ Abrams/Star Trek route of using time travel to basically reset the timeline of events established in previous installments. So, essentially, a remake, but a remake by way of time travel shenanigans.
In all honesty, this first look makes Genysis look nothing more than rehash of all the best bits of the first two movies, right down to the T-1000 and the quest to prevent Judgment Day from ever happening. While it’s nice to see Arnie back in the iconic role that made him a superstar, I can’t help but wonder at this point what this new installment will bring to the franchise, other than a much warranted nostalgia for James Cameron.
Still, you never know…
Terminator Genisys is set for release next July.
