The nominations for the 66th Primetime Emmys were announced last week and they came with the usual mix of excitement and outrage. The awards will take place in Los Angeles on Monday 25th August.

With so many great drama shows on at the moment, the Outstanding Drama category has always been a tough one to get right. Though Breaking Bad had a cracker of a final season, I think newcomer True Detective may be in line to claim the award this year. Same goes for the Lead Actor in a Drama where I reckon Matthew McConaughey will continue his 2014 awards sweep, though he faces extremely stiff competition from the likes of Bryan Cranston and the criminally under-awarded Jon Hamm.

It’s great to see Lizzy Caplan in the Lead Actress list for her work on Masters of Sex but it’s Robin Wright who leads the pack thanks to her stunning Claire Underwood in House of Cards. In the Supporting Categories, I’d love Aaron Paul to take home the statue for the last season of Breaking Bad, where his every appearance as Jesse just broke my heart, but both Peter Dinklage and Mandy Patinkin have had amazing seasons on Game of Thrones and Homeland, respectively.

In the comedy categories, the Outstanding Series has to go to either Louie or Veep, both of which have been knocking it out of the park this year. The acting awards may follow suit as well, with Louis C.K. and Julia Louis-Dreyfus claiming victory but it’d be great to see Amy Poehler get some loving for her always wonderful work in Parks & Recreation.

Fargo and American Horror Story pretty much have the mini-series nominations tied up and I wouldn’t be surprised to see both shows taking home a number of awards come August 25th.

But with any major awards there comes some disappointment. I would have loved shows like The Americans and Hannibal to get some recognition, particularly for the latter’s Mads Mikkelsen who has managed to completely own the role, dispelling all memory of Anthony Hopkins. The same goes for Tatiana Maslany, whose work on Orphan Black is outright astonishing, juggling so many different clones and still managing to make each one an individual in their own right.

For now though, we’ll just have to wait and see who comes away victorious on the night. You can check out the full list of nominations below.
