Comprised of London-based duo Jack St James and Alice Fox, Avec Sans emerged online in late May 2012 and have been gathering momentum ever since. Trinidadian St James and Mancunian Fox have both been involved in making music since they were teenagers, when Fox took inspiration from the Eels and Radiohead and St.James was part of a number of punk bands before he discovered the genre where his heart truly resided. It seems the duo have finally found their place in the electro-pop scene and it’s a promising place at that.
Following their version of Bon Iver’s Perth and the subsequent Heartbreak Hi, Avec Sans are back with their second original song, displaying a harder edge and a darker electro-dance feel. With their latest single, The Answer, Avec Sans have created a dynamic and synth enthused sound, a distinctive slice of electronic melancholy and easy on the ear feminine vocals. It’s a single that wouldn’t be out of place on the popular 2011 Drive Soundtrack. You could slot it in neatly between Kavinsky & Lovefoxxx’s Nightcall and Desire’s Under Your Spell and the listener wouldn’t be considered a fool for thinking it had been written especially for the film.
If you’re a fan of Icona Pop, Purity Ring and Sleigh Bells chances are you’ll love Avec Sans (if you don’t already!).
The Answer will officially be released on Monday 10th December by Sans Records, though a free download of the song can be found on the band’s Soundcloud page (click here for direct link). There’s also a B-side to enjoy, which is a club remix of the single and is bought to you courtesy of Bill Posters and Will Power (who recently mixed Wiley’s Can You Hear Me).
These two are making their mark on the electro scene and if The Answer is anything to go by, they’re certainly a band to watch out for.
